Zambia Embraces Photovoltaic Energy as a Pillar of Sustainable Development

With an average annual sunshine duration exceeding 2,800 hours and strong solar radiation levels, Zambia possesses natural advantages for the large-scale development of photovoltaic (PV) energy. As the nation accelerates its transition to clean energy, its development goals are increasingly aligned with the technological expertise and integrated solutions offered by Chinese enterprises.

Chinese companies are playing a pivotal role—not only by exporting photovoltaic products but also by bringing advanced technical standards, engineering know-how, and full industrial capabilities. This collaborative approach is helping Zambia and other African nations build independent, resilient, and sustainable energy systems.

As Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema noted,

“China’s photovoltaic technology has injected strong momentum into our energy transition. It represents a bright path toward a sustainable future.”

This growing partnership reflects a shared commitment to green development and offers a powerful model of South-South cooperation under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.
